Description
Two prints have been pasted onto this leaf: the one on the left reads atabo, a slang word meaning "naturally", or "of course". The same word is repeated in one of the white panels in the print on the right, and it is very tempting to think that, perhaps in this case, atabo is the nickname of the character or actor pictured. The pattern on the character's costume (snow and pine trees) and the style of his hair is very similar to that of the character "Matsuō" (or "Matsuōmaru") in Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami ("Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy"), seen here.
Delicate nunomezuri (blind-embossing involving "printing" a piece of cloth) has been used on the print on the left, giving a touch of luxury to the work.
