Description
In this print we see actor Sojuro as Izaemon, the jealous lover of the courtesan Yugiri and the protagonist of the short kabuki play "Love Letters from the Pleasure Quarters" (Kuruwa Bunsho). The scene depicted involves Izaemon visiting the Yoshidaya Teahouse, where Yugiri works, after hearing she is ill.
Izaemon's hairline has been delicately carved and some calligraphic characters appear on his outfit (let us know if you can read them!), probably reflecting the title of the play - "Love Letters..." The pattern behind the portrait resembles the traditional Japanese asanoha pattern.
