Description
The farmer Sakura Sogoro in the "separation from the child" scene of Hana no Kumo Sakura no Akebono ("Cloud of Flowers: Sakura's Dawn"). The story, apparently based on a grain of truth, revolves around the tragic story of Sogoro, the head of Kotsu village, who was executed when he made an appeal to the shogunate after village members complained to him about excessive taxation. This print seems to show Sogoro bidding his family farewell for the last time, knowing in his heart that he will not come back alive.
A snow-covered boat and some crops are depicted in the lower panel.
