Description
This print seems to depict Sawaichi, a shamisen-playing Buddhist monk who was the protagonist of the play Sanjusansho Kannon Reigenki ("The Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage Sites"), in a scene at Tsubosaka Temple. The 33 temples refer to the those in Kansai visited as part of the Kansai Kannon Pilgrimage.
This kabuki was based on the earlier joruri performance titled Tsubosaka Reigenki.
The shadows printed in pink inside the character's ear show the artist's attention to detail, and the brush-like strokes in the image by Shoshu demonstrate the block-carver's skill.
This print has fewer subscribers than the other prints; only two names appear in the white meta-senjafuda slips depicted. This suggests that the two sponsors whose names appear are deemed in some way more important than other sponsors. The name on the left, for example, is that of Sawamura Shirogoro (the fifth, presumably), a famous kabuki and film actor of the period. It is not known who Shimizu Sada (the other name) was, but perhaps he donated more than the other sponsors...
