Onnagata actor Nakamura Shibajaku as the willow spirit Oryu, wife of the hunter Heitaro, is pictured here in the Heitaro Sumika ("Heitaro`s House") scene of Sanjusangendo Munagi no Yurai ("The Ridge Pole of the Sanjusangendo Temple"). In the lower panel is the willow tree from which Oryu's spirit came. The story goes that Heitaro prevented the tree from being cut down, and Oryu changed into human form and married him out of gratitude. Many years later the tree is cut down, and Oryu bids her family farewell, then disappears.
