This print shows the actor Kichiemon as the Genji warrior Kumagai Naozane (熊谷直実), from the kabuki play "Chronicle of the Battle of Ichi-no-tani" (Ichinotani Futaba Gunki). The scene depicted is the popular Kumagai Jinya ("Kumagai's Battle Camp") scene, the final scene of act III.

Kumagai's fierce kumadori makeup is a highlight of the print, and his orange costume is brought out by the dark blue shippo-like pattern in the background.
