Description
Yojiro, the monkey tamer and older brother of the courtesan Oshun, is pictured next to an illustration of a dancing monkey in the Horikawa scene of Chikagoro Kawara no Tatehiki ("The Tragic Love of Oshun and Dembei", also known as Sarumawashi Kado De no Hitosushi). The actor depicted in the role of Yojiro is (Kataoka) Nizaemon. The play apparently caused a sensation due to the occasional use of a real monkey, often resulting in amusing non-scripted moments. The story itself, however, was apparently based on a tragic historic happening, and followed the tale of Denbei and Oshun's double suicide along the Kamogawa River.
