Description
Gonta (played by Onoe Kikugoro), the troubled son of ths sushi shop owner Yazaemon, carries a sushi tub of silver coins in the "Sushiya" scene of the kabuki Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura ("Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees"). The link with the two lanterns in the lower panel is unclear. Perhaps the crests on the lanterns, which feature arrows (ya), hint to the name of Gonta's father Yazaemon...?
A highlight of the print is the lightly coloured make-up applied to Gonta's face. The pink makeup around the eyes is so faint it is almost imperceptible, and a light blue hue has been carefully printed inside the character's eyeballs.
