Description
The shape of the birds are unusually depicted by dotted lines, which is perhaps Utamaro’s attempt to define a new drawing technique for woodblock prints.
It is a bit comical that while three Japanese white-eyes are perched close together on the narrow branch, only one long-tailed tit is sitting on a much wider branch.
For the background the very subtle pink ’ate-nashi-bokashi’ ('vague' gradation) is applied at the upper left and in the middle (horizontally). This adds a mild and warm impression to the overall image.
