Description
The bird on the right is a type of owl known in Japanese as (‘mimizuku’). Utamaro has depicted it in a very realistic way, by varying his method of drawing the feathers on different parts of the bird - the head, face, wings and chest.
He has used the 'karazuri' (embossing) technique on the two bullfinches, as well as extremely delicate gradations; the birds are very realistic.
