Description
This print of chrysanthemums is used to open the second book of Utamaro's set and introduces autumn. Chrysanthemums are a particularly special flower in Japan that signify nobility and appear on the Japanese Imperial Family’s crest. Yellow chrysanthemums such as the ones we see in this print can also be used to represent broken love, an apt theme for this set of books on the lives of courtesans.
