Description
Titled Dōtei Shūgetsu ("Autumn Moon Over Lake Dongting"), this is one print from a series of eight by Kunisada based on the Chinese "Eight Views of Xiaoxiang". We can see the autumn moon over Lake Dongting mentioned in the title in the vignette in the upper right. The woman in the print has half-removed her clothes, probably to help her move more easily, and uses two mirrors to examine her hair. It seems she is preparing for a night out. She has a tattoo on the underside of her arm, a rare feature for a bijin-ga. Her hairline has been finely carved, and her kimono, which appears to be decorated with starfish, is a highlight of the print.
