Description
This print by Kunimasa shows actor Iwai Kumesaburô (also known as Iwai Hanshirō) in a female role, possibly that of the samurai Sakuramaru's wife Yae from the classic kabuki play Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami (菅原伝授手習鑑, "Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy"). It was probably originally published around 1796.
The character seems to be chopping up food in this print, smiling and looking over her shoulder. She sports a head covering featuring the Iwai Hanshiro crest of three fans enclosed in a circle. The very light blush on her cheeks shows the skill of the printer.
