Description
This print by Shunkō shows the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō V (also known as Ichikawa Ebizō) in one of his most famous roles as the hero in the "Shibaraku" scene featured in many different kabuki plays of the Edo period. The print was originally produced around 1788–1791, and Shibaraku was originally staged in 1697 at the Nakamura Theatre. For more information on the scene, see this description.
The dramatic curved lines of the kumadori makeup of the actor are contrasted with the straight lines of the Ichikawa family crest in this piece. Bokashi gradation and thick, brush-like lines have also been used.
