Description
This is the leftmost print of a triptych depicting Daidozan, a real sumo wrestler who lived in the Edo period and who, according to the MFA, "was said to be 1.2 meters high and weighed 80 kilograms at the age of eight". The prints on the left and right of the centre print, which features Daidozan in the sumo ring, show famous sumo wrestlers looking on, as we can see in our print. Only two copies of the original triptych are known to be extant. The triptych may depict an opening ceremony in 1795 in Ryogoku, Edo (Tokyo), in which Daidozan is known to have participated.
A full view of the triptych can be seen here.
Very light bokashigradation has been used at the edges of this reproduction print to mimic the discolouration in older prints which occurs due to prolonged exposure to light. Close attention has been paid to the skin tones and shaved areas (heads and chins) of the wresters.
