Description
This print from Hokusai's Hyakunin Isshu Uba ga Etoki (百人一首姥がゑとき, "One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets, Explained by the Nurse") series depicts hunters gathered around a bonfire on a cold night in winter, a scene accompanied by a famous poem by Minamoto no Muneyuki Ason in the yellow upper-right panel.
The poem reads: "In the mountain village, it is in winter that my loneliness increases most, when I think how both have dried up, the grasses and people’s visits" (translation by Joshua Mostow).
While the poem seems quite sad, the scene is surprisingly cheery, the fire almost suggesting a cosy feeling that can only be felt in winter. Bokashi gradation has been carefully used in the smoke of the fire.
