Description
A somewhat mysterious print, this oban nishiki-e (large-size brocade print) by Toyokuni is titled Kinuginu (後朝, "Morning Return") in our index for this series of reproductions by Takamizawa. Kinuginu is a word with several meanings, all related to the moment lovers part in the morning after a night together. In the print we can see several different types of flowers planted in a large porcelain (probably Chinese) pot. The sun rises from the clouds in the background, and the flowers seem to reach upwards for its light. While it seems probable that the title was given to this print by Takamizawa, if we use the title, we can put the print into context as a view that two lovers were met with in the morning as they prepared to part. The kirazuri background of the print is a highlight.
