Hiroshige depicted birds very realistically in this series but for this one, he for some reason used a more simplified, and somewhat abstract approach.

He didn’t draw many details for the feathers, and the ivy leaves are not realistic, but rather give a geometrical impression.

The ivy stems twisting around the pine branches are drawn with such beautiful flowing lines that they create wonderful contrast with those more abstract components.
