Description
This is from the series of ‘Views of Famous Places in the Sixty-Odd Provinces’ by Hiroshige, completed two years before his death.
Naruto is one of the largest whirlpools in the world. Hiroshige described this wild and violent whirlpool with such a vigorous touch that viewers will feel as if they are sucked into the depth of the sea. The contrast between the raging pool and a typical depiction of waves is very well done.
The wide ‘bokashi’ gradation - ‘Fukiage bokashi’ 拭き上げぼかし - used on the sky is very effective creating a dynamic view of the field.
