Description
Two white herons or egrets happily fish in the shallows of a river among irises. This print has a number of titles: the Harvard Art Museum titles the print "White Cranes", the MFA "White Herons and Iris", and the MET "Egret in Iris and Grasses". The Japanese typically used is shirosagi (白鷺), which can be translated as either "white heron" or "white egret". The original was produced in the 1830s. An unknown Chinese-style poem appears in the top section of the print (if you have any ideas about what it says, let us know!). The different shades of blue and the clear-cut blades of grass are a highlight.
