Description
An uguisu (Japanese bush warbler) perches on a tsubaki (Japanese camellia) twig in this print by Hiroshige. A poem from the Wakan Roeishu ("Japanese and Chinese Verses for Recitation") appears on the right side. The original print was published around 1842–43 by Wakasaya Yoichi (also known as Jakurindo).
A paraphrase of the Chinese poem: 鶯声誘引来花下 草色拘留坐水辺 (鶯の声に誘われて花の下にやってきた。草の色に引き止められて水辺に座ったままでいる)
Attracted by the song of a bush warbler, I came under the flowering tree. I was captivated by the color of the grass and remained sitting by the waterside.
