Description
This ōtanzaku print is an interesting example of a Hiroshige kachō-ga (bird and flower print) in a couple of ways. First, no poem is featured in the print. While publishers sometimes lost the woodblocks for printing the text of the poems (meaning that early impressions featured a poem while later ones didn't), even early impressions of this work don't include a poem. Could this be to emphasise the size of the parrot? We may never know. Another interesting feature of the print is Hiroshige's choice of bird (a fairly exotic-looking parrot), as a kachō-ga would typically feature a more familiar or delicate bird.
