Description

This print is the fifteenth in the Kabuki Jûhachiban (歌舞伎十八番, "The Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays") series of prints by the artist Kiyotada (also known as Tadakiyo). It depicts actor Ichikawa Danjûrô IX as Kamakura Gongorô Kagemasa (lower left), with an actor from the past as the Prince (Shinnô)(upper right), in the kabuki play Shibaraku (Just a Minute!). Shibaraku was originally staged in 1697 at the Nakamura Theatre and starred Ichikawa Danjûrô I. For more information on the play, see this description.

In this print the warrior Kamakura Gongorô Kagemasa, in fierce kumadori makeup and wearing a costume decorated with the Ichikawa family crest, faces off against Shinnô. Shinnô is another name for the samurai Taira no Masakado. The names of the characters in this play were often changed depending on the producers, and, in this version, Taira no Masakado is the equivalent of the evil lord Kiyohara no Takehira who has imprisoned some innocent imperial loyalists and plans to execute them. Needless to say, he is defeated by Kagemasa at the end of the play.

Karazuri blind-embossing has been used on parts of the villain's costume, and delicate bokashi gradation can be seen in the eyes of both characters. As with all of the prints in this series, the detailed karazuri in the background is also a highlight.
