Description

This print is the fourteenth in the Kabuki Jûhachiban (歌舞伎十八番, "The Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays") series of prints by the artist Kiyotada (also known as Tadakiyo). It depicts actor Ichikawa Danjûrô IX as the "Ghost of Kagekiyo" (Kagekiyo bôkon) in the kabuki play Gedatsu. Gedatsu was originally staged in 1760 at the Ichimura Theatre and starred Ichikawa Danjûrô IV. For more information on the play, see this description.

In this print the Heike warrior Akushichibyôe Kagekiyo, transformed into the God of Thunder, leans on a large temple bell, underneath which he has trapped Akoya, a courtesan whom he loved but who attempted to steal his sword in an act of treachery.

Nunomezuri, a technique in which a piece of actual cloth is "printed" using a woodblock, has been used on Kagekiyo's sash, and karazuri blind-embossing on parts of his costume. The fierce kumadori makeup and colourful costume stand out in the print, but the one point that shows the care with which the print has been produced is the blind-embossing that can be seen between the strands of Kagekiyo's hair! As with all of the prints in this series, the detailed karazuri in the background is also a highlight.
