Description

This print is the sixth in the Kabuki Jûhachiban (歌舞伎十八番, "The Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays") series of prints by the artist Kiyotada (also known as Tadakiyo). It depicts actor Ichikawa Danjûrô IX as Kakoyo Akaemon (lower left), with Hakuen VII (Ichikawa Danjûrô VII) (upper right), in the kabuki play Nanatsumen ("Seven Masks"). Nanatsumen was originally staged in 1740 at the Ichimura Theatre and starred Ichikawa Ebizô II. For more information on the play, see this description.

This print probably depicts the scene in which the mask-maker Akaemon discovers a stolen scroll in the mouth of the last of seven masks he has been viewing. The detail of the mask and its lacquer box is impressive, suggesting its importance and quality. Akaemon wears a costume decorated with the mimasu-mon, the three-square crest of the Danjûrô line of actors. As with all of the prints in this series, the detailed karazuri blind-embossing in the background is also a highlight.
