Description

This print is the ninth in the Kabuki Jûhachiban (歌舞伎十八番, "The Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays") series of prints by the artist Kiyotada (also known as Tadakiyo). It depicts actor Ichikawa Danjûrô IX as Aotake Gorô in the kabuki play Oshimodoshi ("The Demon Repeller"). Oshimodoshi was originally staged in 1727 and starred Ichikawa Danjûrô II. For more information on the play, see this description.

Although here the Oshimodoshi is presented as a play, the word itself is usually used to refer to "a role, a type of role and the title of a famous character performing in the aragoto style. The oshimodoshi is a demon-queller, appearing at the end of a dance-drama or a drama, to subdue a demon or a giant serpent using his large bamboo pole" (quoted from Kabuki 21 Glossary). In this print we can see the distinctive bamboo pole, colourful costume, and kumadori makeup of the character. As with all of the prints in this series, the detailed karazuri blind-embossing in the background is also a highlight.
