Description

This print is the first (after the contents page) in the Kabuki Jûhachiban (歌舞伎十八番, "The Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays") series of prints by the artist Kiyotada (also known as Tadakiyo). It depicts actor Ichikawa Danjûrô IX as Fuwa Banzaemon (top right) in the kabuki play Fuwa, with an actor from the past as Nagoya Sanza (lower left). Fuwa was originally staged in 1680 at the Ichimura Theatre and starred Ichikawa Danjûrô I. For more information on the play, see this description.

The dramatic makeup and kimono patterns (featuring the mimasu-mon (three-square crest of the Danjûrô line of actors), spinning tops, and umbrellas) stand out in this print. As with all of the prints in this series, the detailed karazuri blind-embossing in the background is also a highlight. In this first print it features a pattern of mimasu-mon.
