Description

This print is the tenth in the Kabuki Jûhachiban (歌舞伎十八番, "The Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays") series of prints by the artist Kiyotada (also known as Tadakiyo). It depicts actor Ichikawa Danjûrô IX as Kazusa Akushichibyôe Kagekiyo (upper right), with an actor from the past as Shigetada (lower left), in the kabuki play Kagekiyo. Kagekiyo was originally staged in 1732 at the Nakamura Theatre. For more information on the play, see this description.

In this print, the defeated general of the Heike clan, Kagekiyo (in fierce kumadori makeup), looks down towards Hatakeyama Shigetada, a member of the Genji clan and the right-hand man of Kagekiyo's enemy Minamoto no Yoritomo. As with all of the prints in this series, the detailed karazuri blind-embossing in the background is also a highlight.
