Description
The onnagata actor Matsumoto Yonesaburō is presented here as Shinobu, a woman on the trail of her father's murderer, disguised as the Shōshō of Kewaizaka ("Kewaizaka no Shosho"), from the play Katakiuchi Noriyaibanashi. On the sleeve is the actor's crest, referred to as the "three Ginkgo trees with rice" (三つ銀杏に米の字) pattern. The British Museum holds an early impression of the portrait.
