Description
The kabuki actor Sawamura Sōjūrō III (1753-1801) was best known for his tachiyaku ("young man") roles. In this print he is depicted in the role of Ogishi Kurando, a character from the play (em)Hana-Ayame Bunroku Soga (花菖蒲文禄曽我). The fan is given a particularly interesting colour and texture in this reproduction possibly recreating the oxidisation of metal pigments used in the original. The MFA holds an early impression of the same illustration.
