Description

Not much is known about this artist - Shosai Ikkei (所齊一景). His most widely known work is a set of "48 famous views of Tokyo", showing the dramatic changes in the city since the Edo era.

The title of this series is Kyokun Zen-Aku Kagami (教訓善悪鏡); a direct translation would be "A Didactic Mirror of Good and Evil."

In each image there are small human-like creatures that have round faces. The ones in white clothes are good souls written 善 (zen) on the faces and bad souls are in red clothes with 悪 (aku) on the faces.

Over the course of the twelve sheets, we see two alternate pathways through life: in the upper panels, we follow a dissolute reprobate, while the lower panels show us the actions of a model citizen.

Which model will you follow?
