Description
Here we see the famous poetess Ono no Komachi (825-900) in a very elegant kimono with sakura (cherry blossoms) and a full moon in the background. Komachi was one of the Rokkasen — the six most celebrated waka poets of the early Heian period, and was renowned for her beauty.
The sakura have been blind-embossed, as have many layers of Komachi's kimono - it takes a little time to take in all of the patterns in this print! While now difficult to see due to the ageing of the print, the moon and possibly the clouds once featured metallic pigments to produce a shimmering effect.
