Description
This is another print by Matora of an older, Edo period painting. In this particular print we see a shirabyōshi (a female entertainer or dancer). According to "The Private World of Surimono" by Sadako Ohki, the performer is dancing as the waka poet Ariwara no Narihira (825-880).
Metallic pigments, now a little dulled, have been used in many places on the dancer's costume, and the patterned karazuri blind-embossing is another highlight. The red section of the kimono appears to be decorated with picture frames, a cryptic choice of pattern.
