Description
This is one example (there is another one in this series) of what is generally known as Hokusai's 'Small Flowers'.
And although the gradations and tones on the Sparrow in this example are done very nicely, the overall effect is 'quite' different from what the original looks like.
There is a good illustration on this page of the Museum of Arts (Boston) website, and a comparison of the two demonstrates clearly that the O-Edo Mokuhan sha (publisher of this version) was clearly a 'second tier' publisher, behind such companies as Adachi and Takamizawa.
The British Museum has more information on the poem: 東風日夜発 桃李不禁吹 検点濃華事 辛夷落較遅 The east wind rises day and night. / Peach and plum blossoms cannot help being ruffled. / I study the dewdrops drenching the flowers. / The magnolia falls comparatively later.
