Description

A strong breeze pushes a yakatabune boat beyond the reeds and into the Naka River. Two women who have been waiting for the storm to pass set out, eager to enjoy the remains of the day. Once again we see the character "ヒ" (also visible as a pattern in the background of the senjafuda print) hidden in one of the obi of the women - probably hinting at the name of the printer or the senjafuda group, which we have not been able to pin down just yet.

The attention to detail can be seen in the fact that the narrow spaces between the sails of the boat behind the reeds have been colour-printed to match the scenery in the background.

We're not quite sure just yet which print of Hiroshige's this design was based on, or if it was based on a single print at all. It seems possible that the image was created by blending different Hiroshige designs (such as this print of a boat's hull obscured by blossoms and this print of a boat behind reeds) together to produce a Hiroshige-esque illustration.

The fan-print is the senjafuda group's take on a "Clearing Skies" theme from the "Eight Views" series.
