Description
The theme of "beauties on boats under bridges" is is widely used in Japanese woodblock prints. Here, for example, we see a print from 1785 with a similar theme. In such prints, the supports of the bridges frame the beautiful women in a composition pleasing to the eye.
We're not quite sure just yet which print of Hiroshige's this design was based on, or if it was based on a single print at all. It seems possible that the image was created by blending different Hiroshige designs (such as this print of a low boat passing under a bridge and this print of Ryogoku Bridge) together to produce a Hiroshige-esque illustration.
The attention to detail is a nice feature of the print; Mt. Fuji rises from an orange haze in the background, and a woman plays a shamisen on one of the boats between the supports. The fan-print is the senjafuda group's take on an "Evening Glow" design, from the "Eight Views" fan-shaped print series.
