Description
A spectacular set of senshafuda, produced (best guess) in the early Taisho period. The quality of carving, and the precision of the printing, is of the highest standard.
The theme is 'famous products' found along the road, but the locations have also served as source for the poetry on each print, which is of the type known as kyoku (or more commonly, senryu), a genre of cynical verse, frequently using black humour.
An interesting point is that - presumably due to the layout of the groupings for carving and printing - the makers needed to omit one station to get things to fit on the pages, so station #52 - Kusatsu - is missing.
