Description
This print, with its pitch black background, is a particularly eye-catching composition of Settai's. The lack of white space is rare for a Settai print, the artist being notable for his plain white backgrounds. The large firefly at the left of the print is printed using a lovely turquoise pigment, like a precious jewel, and the figure of the woman is illuminated, giving us a view of her fashionable clothes and finely carved hairline. Nunome-zuri, a technique in which a piece of actual cloth is "printed" using a woodblock in order to give texture to a print, can be seen in her obi sash.
