Description

This print, Uchiwa wo Motsu Onna, shows a young woman rolling the handle of a round fan between her palms, lost in thought. The three-leafed ivy crest that appears on her fan lets us know that she is, in fact, the famous teahouse girl Naniwa O-Kita who Utamaro depicted in many of his prints.

The print is from Utamaro's Fujin Sōgaku Jittai ("Ten Physiognomies of Women") series of prints.
