The Screenplay: Scene 5

Posted by Dave Bull on December 21, 2022 [Permalink]

John nervously shifted his weight as he stood in SHINJI's workshop, trying to work up the nerve to ask for help. He had been SHINJI's apprentice for months now, and despite his best efforts, he still felt like he was struggling to keep up.

SHINJI's daughter, Miyu, watched from the doorway. She had been less than thrilled to find out her father had accepted a westerner as his apprentice and had made her feelings quite clear.

SHINJI, sensing the tension in the room, cleared his throat. "Miyu, why don't you show John the proper way to carve the wood?"

Miyu crossed her arms and scowled. "I don't think it's necessary. He'll figure it out eventually."

John hung his head, feeling embarrassed.

SHINJI sighed and patted John on the shoulder. "My daughter is right," he said. "You will figure it out eventually. But, it can't hurt to have a little help along the way. Come, Miyu. Show John what you know."

Miyu reluctantly stepped forward, her arms still crossed. As she walked over to the workbench, she said, "Fine. But you'd better be paying attention, because I'm only doing this once."
