Description

Left: The Hanamatsuri (also known as the Shaku-son Ko-tan), an event in April celebrating the birth of Buddha. Here, children pour sweet tea over the figure of the child Buddha to recreate the scene of Shakyamuni's first bath under scented rain. The festival is closely associated with praying for the health of young children.

Right: Children carry lanterns through the dusk at the Sanja Sairei, an event held in May at Asakusa Shrine.
