Description
"Waterfall at Aoi Hill" shows villagers (or rather, city-dwellers) of Akasaka in Edo (present day Tokyo) going about daily business while a small waterfall thunders into the moat surrounding the Shogun's castle below. The "waterfall" (or rather, weir) are no longer extant, but became popular for a time after Hokusai produced this print. The different textures illustrated, from the water (calm, then frothy, then rough) to the stone wall, the wooden roof, and the dirt path, are an attractive feature of the print.
