Description
This is the kabuki actor Nakamura Kisaburo 中村喜三郎 acting a beauty who is seated at a kotatsu (a table with a heater inside) while reading a letter.
The print belongs to the benizuri-e (紅摺絵) category. Before the invention of registration marks (Kento), all prints were monochrome, and in some cases, colors were applied by hand. This print represents an early stage in color printing. Here, green and red colors are applied on top of the key block outlines.
The artist is Ishikawa Toyonobu 石川豊信 (1711~1785), who was known for drawing beautiful women with round plump faces.
The writing is a type of riddle. (Unfortunately we couldn't decipher the first name of the person.)
