Description

Backstage scene of the kabuki actor Nakamura Nakazo (seated in the middle). The standing figure is Nakamura Riko. Depictions of the kabuki backstage are rare, and Shunsho (1726~1793) bravely challenged this theme.

Nakazo is seated at the makeup chest with a mirror, and speaking to Riko. Behind him, a man appears to be working on one of the wigs.

The room is filled with items such as a large trunk (Nagamochi 長持), some long items in a cloth bag, and many layers of futon bedding, all of which convey the backstage atmosphere vividly.

All the details are well carved and printed, and along with the subtle color palette, create a pleasing impression.
