Description

In this print, Eisui depicts the courtesan Hanahito (also read "Hanabito") of the Ōgiya brothel. The print is from the "Beauties for the Five Festivals" (Bijin Gosekku, 美人五節句) series, and this particular print introduces Hanahito together with the Doll Festival (Hinamatsuri, 雛祭り). Hanahito smiles down at some sort of bottle, admiring it, giving us a beautiful view of her many hair ornaments. Her teeth have been blackened to enhance her beauty, and the distressed rich dark mica background is a highlight of the work.

This is a reproduction of a print probably originally published in the 1790s by Maru-ya Bun'emon.
