Description

The Ōgiya was the brothel in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters where the famous courtesan Takigawa, pictured in this print, worked. Takigawa received a high education from the poet and scholar Katō Chikage which no doubt contributed to her great popularity, as the highest ranked courtesans were expected to have extensive knowledge of Japanese culture and literature. In this image we see her smiling, probably at a client, and resting her hand on her chest just above the many layers of her eye-catching kimono. Her teeth are blackened to enhance her beauty, and the distressed mica background is a highlight of the print.

It is unclear when the original print this reproduction was made from was originally published, but the artist, Hosoda Eishi (more commonly known as Chōbunsai Eishi (鳥文斎 栄之), 1756-1829), started printmaking in 1784 and gave up the art in 1801 to pursue painting, so the 1780-1790s seem probable.
