Description
This is an unusual design in that unlike the common pattern at the time of creating static images, this one is full of motion.
We can easily imagine the scene - with the onset of a sudden rain shower, the young lady rushed to take in the laundry, but her wooden clog slipped off. Utamaro also depicted the storm cloud and rain in a very unique and realistic manner.
This image was originally created as a part of a calendar distributed among a group of affluent people. Letters and numbers giving information on the days of the month are hidden in the pattern on the fabric (mostly in the hanging clothes). More information on this can be found here.
