Description: This print is from a two-volume collection that follows the history of ukiyo-e in reproduced prints by Takamizawa company published in 1952. The two sets are in rough chronological order and follow different techniques through history, starting with sumizuri-e, moving through tan-e, urushi-e, beni-e, and so on. Please visit our Collection page where you can see our own preserved copy of this entire set at high-resolution.

A woman in a multi-patterned kimono and ichimatsu-moyo (checkered) obi hangs a poem on a blossoming cherry tree in front of a manmaku curtain in this famous print by Toyonobu. The print is an urushi-e, an image featuring a hand-applied mixture of glue and black pigment to look like lacquer, most prominent in the thick texture of the crest on the curtain in the background. The pink blush on the woman's cheek is a nice touch bringing out the theme of feminine beauty in the print.

This reproduction is a sumizuri-e (ukiyoe printed with black pigment) with fudezaishiki (hand colouring by brush).

This print has slight creases and slight toning. Takamizawa folded the print once to fit it into their packaging, and the crease is still visible.
