Description: This print is from the set which is consisting of reproductions of 25 of Hiroshige's lesser-known prints, given the English title "Rare Publication: Selected Works by Hiroshige" by the publisher, O-Edo Mokuhansha. Please visit our Colleciton page for more information on this set.

This horizontal oban of a carp swimming upstream was taken from Hiroshige's "A Collection of Fish" (Uo Zukushi) series of prints, probably privately published in the early 1840s and later commercially published. The edition reproduced here has green reeds in the upper-left corner - some other editions do not.

At least one later edition in a different colour scheme and printed without the poem has been recorded. The poem by Komogaki Makuzu in the upper section of this print reads, "In the end, it no doubt becomes a dragon in the clouds of the palace - the force of the carp climbing the river rapids" (translation by Haruo Shirane, "Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons: Nature, Literature, and the Arts", p. 143).

Printer: Hosoi / Carver: Endo

There are pinholes at the top corners.
