Designer: Ando Hiroshige Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print is from a set of reproductions of 25 of Hiroshige's lesser-known prints, given the English title "Rare Publication: Selected Works by Hiroshige" by the publisher, O-Edo Mokuhansha. Please visit our Collection page where you can see our own preserved copy of this entire set. Mogami River flows towards Mount Gassan in this print, the 29th in Hiroshige's "Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces of Japan" (Dai Nihon Rokujuyoshu Meisho Zue) series originally published in 1853 by Koshimuraya Heisuke (Koshihei). Mt. Gassan, Mt. Haguro, and Mt. Yudono are known as the Dewa Sanzan ("The Three Mountains of Dewa"), "Dewa" being an older province corresponding with modern-day Yamagata Prefecture. At 1984 metres above sea level, Mt. Gassan is the tallest of the three, and it is clear that Hiroshige tried to emphasise its height through the use of perspective.
